Castles

Northern Spain is covered in castles. The area of Castile owes its name to the number of castles (Latin Castella > Castiella > Castilla) which were built to support the Reconquest of the peninsula from the Moors (711-1492). Southern Spain is covered in castles built by the Moors to consolidate their hold and to withstand the Christian onslaught. Then there are the coastal areas bristling with castles built by all manner of defenders over the centuries against potential attack and actual threat.
